What can I expect on my first visit?
Your first visit as a new patient will be approximately thirty minutes long depending upon the problem. We will take a detailed history from you and, if necessary, examine you. This examination will not require any special preparation.
After this we will agree any tests that may be required and then agree upon a management plan.
What tests might I need?
It depends upon the presenting problem. We place a great deal of emphasis on the history so sometimes no further tests are needed. In other instances you may need blood tests, a stool test, a scan or a camera examination of the upper or lower gastrointestinal tract. Whatever is recommended, you can be assured that you will understand the reason for it and exactly what is involved.
Will I need a follow up appointment?
That depends upon the problem. Essentially our patients come to us for two main reasons:
- They wish to have reassurance about symptoms they are having.
- They wish to have their symptoms treated.
Usually patients want a bit of both and our job is to make sure they get it. If this means a follow up appointment is needed then this will be made clear at the initial consultation.
Can I bring a friend or family member with me?
Absolutely. We welcome anybody that you wish to bring along.
Will I get a letter after the consultation?
It is our policy to copy all correspondence to the referring GP and to the patient. We want you to own your information. In addition, we are happy to provide copies or summaries of any subsequent tests.
